Nestled in increasingly trendy upper Woodstock, it strikes a refreshing chord, halfway between an intimate local and a sleekly cosmopolitan meeting-place. Tues-Sun 6pm-2am.
Bar Code 16 Hudson St, Green Point tel 021 421 5305. A leather uniform and jeans bar that attracts an older crowd, Bar Code has monthly underwear and fetish parties. The atmosphere is industrial hardcore with cruising areas, a darkroom, video, pool table and outdoor garden. Daily 9pm till late.
The Bronx, Angels and Sky 35 Somerset Rd, Green Point tel 021 419 9216. A complex of clubs that share a courtyard and a reputation as the heartbeat of Cape Town's gay nightlife. Angels and Sky are two cavernous dance venues, while Bronx is a hugely popular and energetic bar. The crowd here is mixed, unpretentious and committed to having a good time. Daily till late.
Café Manhattan 74 Waterkant St, Green Point tel 021 421 6666. A cultured, relaxed restaurant-bar which serves good affordable food (even Sunday roasts) and hosts live music every Thursday night (no cover charge). It also features an outside terrace beneath oak trees. Straight-friendly. Daily noon-late.
Club 55 22 Somerset Rd, Green Point tel 021 425 2739. A young and sassy theatre/club/bistro attracting a cosmopolitan crowd. The decor can be described as "warehouse chic", and regular live entertainment includes drag shows (Wednesdays) and revues (Thursdays) - cover charge R35. It takes on its club persona on Fridays and Saturdays. Daily 10am till late.
On Broadway 21 Somerset Rd, Green Point tel 021 418 8338. A great cabaret restaurant-bar with Mediterranean-style food and live performances every night of the week. One of the few venues committed to the city's small but sassy cabaret scene. Top comic and satirist Pieter Dirk Uys performs every Monday night, there are feature shows Wednesdays to Sundays, and drag shows on Sundays and Tuesdays. All shows start at 9pm and cost R45. You can go earlier for dinner, but booking is essential. Mixed crowd, and definitely straight-friendly. Daily 7pm till late.
Robert's Café and Cigar Bar 74 Waterkant St, De Waterkant tel 021 425 2478. A relaxed and convivial place in De Waterkant gay village, where you can have good food and socialize at the bar; a nice place to eat out with a sexy, bluesey atmosphere. Daily noon-very late.
Rosie's 125a Waterkant St, De Waterkant, opposite Manhattan tel 021 250 7621. A small intimate pool bar attracting a bear crowd and leather boys, with a restaurant that's a popular after-work drinking spot with angels and demons. Tues-Fri 4pm-late, Sat & Sun 2pm-late
